Trade deal spurs sales of classic Italian pasta

The value of Italian pasta exports to South Africa has grown by over 40% since the EU signed a trade agreement with it in 2012.

Pasta Astorino was among those taking advantage, with high demand among South African importers for its real Italian pasta, produced with a traditional variety of wheat. Working with universities and research centres, Astorino has reintroduced old-style Italian wheat varieties, such as 'Senatore Cappelli', long since abandoned by larger producers in favour of more productive grain types.

Exports from the EU support more than 2.7 million jobs in Italy.
