EU governments and customs authorities carry out regular checks on all imports, from cosmetics to fruit and meat to machinery. Where concerns arise, immediate action is taken, including suspending imports.
Some critics argue that increased competition could lower standards and force companies to engage in a 'race to the bottom'. Yet the EU already has more than 60 trade deals and there is no evidence of that. On the contrary, EU standards are among the highest in the world. Trade agreements, like the one EU recently concluded with Canada, include guarantees to uphold EU standards.
